ARE DIVORCE LAWS IN CANADA MORE LIBERAL OR LESS LIBERAL THAN IN THE USA?

Are they about the same via Canada, or have been the opposite provinces really opposite from any other?

my friend from Canada is getting divorced and he said up there you have to wait a year before you file for divorce…i think thats a little extreme however it does make people think rethink getting married just in case it wont work they stuck together for a year…plus during that time they might be able to make it work out…guess it has its pro’s and con’s.

People always act like Canada and the United States are interchangeable. They have stricter laws, in my opinion, in Canada.

After reading the post here from Americans, I would venture to say that in Canada divorce laws are more liberal.

For instance, mediation is an option, not a requirement. Custody agreements from one province are honored in every province. Once you separate, you may date/sleep with whomever you want and it’s not considered adultery.

The one year waiting period is for ‘no-fault’ divorces. If you want to be divorced within the first year of separation you have to have grounds – either abuse or adultery. But whether you’ve been abused or betrayed has no bearing on the outcome of the divorce petition. Nobody gets penalized for being a jerk.
